The 6 key Water Wise Rules

1. You may water up to three days a week (Sunday to Saturday). You choose the days.

2. From May 1 to Oct. 15, water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to reduce evaporation.

3. Don’t let water pool on hard surfaces or flow down gutters.

4. Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.

5. Use a shut-off nozzle when washing anything with a hose.

6. Clean hard surfaces (such as driveways, sidewalks and patios) with water only if there is a public health and safety concern

1. Water Early in the Morning

The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, ideally between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. During these cooler hours, less water evaporates, allowing your grass to absorb more moisture. Watering in the evening can leave your lawn damp overnight, increasing the risk of fungal diseases.

2. Adjust Watering Based on Weather

Your lawn’s watering needs change with the weather. In hot, dry conditions, you may need to water more frequently, while cooler or rainy periods call for less. Check local weather forecasts and adjust your watering schedule to avoid overwatering during rainy spells or underwatering during heat waves.

3. Use the Right Amount of Water

Most lawns need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. To measure how much water your sprinkler delivers, place a few shallow containers (like tuna cans) around your lawn while watering. Time how long it takes to fill them with an inch of water, and use that as a guide for your watering sessions.

4. Water Deeply and Less Frequently

Deep, infrequent watering encourages grass roots to grow deeper, making your lawn more drought-resistant. Aim to water once or twice a week, delivering enough water to penetrate 6–8 inches into the soil. Avoid frequent, shallow watering, which can lead to weak roots and patchy grass.

5. Maintain Your Lawn and Equipment

A healthy lawn absorbs water more efficiently, so regular maintenance is key. Mow at the right height (typically 2.5–3.5 inches) to shade the soil and reduce evaporation. Keep your sprinkler system in good condition by checking for leaks, clogged nozzles, or misaligned heads to ensure even water distribution.
